为什么会有文化大革命可能是个很多中国人都没仔细想过的？甚至今天我提这个问题很多人都会认为我是小题大做或者严重跑题。


今天，这个同事发了这篇文章给我。一起吃午饭时，他再次和我谈到了奥运，试图来理解我，作为一个对祖国怀着无限热爱的中国人，我在一片欢呼中到底在担心什么。如果说，他当年完全不能理解我的担心，今天的他，在看到中国高涨的爱国热情之后，多少有点理解我。


我们谈到了所受到教育的不同，对西藏问题的认识不同。同时，我告诉他，有些人所表现的高涨的爱国热情不只是因为爱国。有些人也是想借此发泄自我，因为这种发泄会得到普遍的社会承认。爱国是什么，是在和平年代做好本职工作，做好力所能及的事情让祖国更美好。火炬过后在几个城市留下的一片狼藉，遍地的国旗，不是我们爱国的表现。


我父亲是个党性很强的人，我曾从军多年。我想我对爱国的理解，对为祖国而战的理解比很多同龄人更深刻。希望奥运带来的思考让我们成熟，让中国更强大。


文章我没有时间翻译，欢迎朋友们翻译。文中有些观点是典型的西方人的看法，难免片面，但很多问题值得我们思考。借用文中一句话作为结束：毫无疑问，中国正成为一个强大的国家，也许是世界上最强大的。唯一的问题是，它的强大力量将是哪一种，它将带什么给世界和平和文明进步？

A rising tide of nationalism raises uneasy questions



China's hosting of the Olympics has made Chinese people the world over swell with national pride. But it has also exposed Chinese sensitivity and even hostility to criticism and challenge from the west, which are seen as deliberate insults and malicious distortions of China and the Chinese.


The pitch and intensity of the reaction of large groups of Chinese all over the world, and in China itself, has not only worried western governments but also alarmed many Chinese people. However, when the latter attempt to call for calm, they become targets of ferocious attacks.


Stifling opposition and debate is dangerous, because when rationality is barred, darkness descends. In Hong Kong, while criticism of the special administrative region government is still relatively free, self-censorship and curtailing the freedom of expression of others have become the norm where Beijing is concerned. From the refusal of entry to sculptor Jens Galschiot and other rights activists, to the "zero tolerance" of possible protests against China during the torch relay, the matter cannot be clearer.


There were also subtle means of intimidation, such as the wide publicity given to surveys showing that the overwhelming majority of Hong Kong people did not welcome any protests or actions during the torch relay. Away from the cameras, there was direct intervention by police, who manhandled real or imagined protesters, while tolerating rowdy mainland compatriots.


The hostility to criticism and challenge is fuelled by the conspiracy theory that the west is deliberately plotting against China by sewing seeds of enmity in and about Tibet, because of western fears of China becoming a great world power.


Most of the elation as the torch passed through Hong Kong was the spontaneous response of ordinary residents. Groups from elsewhere exhibiting belligerent patriotism were in a minority. But there is no question that the SAR government put on a good show to please Beijing.


But what is the real price Hong Kong, and China as a whole, have paid? Which kind of patriotism is better for China's future: the kind which manifests itself as might and power which broaches no challenge? Or one which manifests itself as the expectation that China embraces the universal values of rights and freedoms?


The sea of red flags around the world wherever the torch went told a powerful tale. The Olympic colours and spirit have been dwarfed by the display of nationalism. Is this what a rising China will mean to the world and to its own nationals? In Hong Kong, which should have been China's most international city, few international characteristics were in evidence. There was little indication of a pluralist or multicultural society, or greater understanding by this government of the Olympic spirit.


On the contrary, the list of torch-bearers, and the way they were chosen, reflected poorly on Hong Kong's governance. Such a major public event was not run as a public good, but as a chance to appropriate the public good for private distribution. A place on the list was seen as a gift from tycoon Timothy Fok Tsun-ting and the liaison office, and a business or political boon. What did the SAR government do to assert the public sentiment? Where was the principle of "one country, two systems"?


The only saving grace, ironically, was the criticism voiced by the public through the media that the list was a scandal. But the message to the world is already clear: that, under the red flag, Hong Kong has no will to preserve its characteristics and, hence, has lost the best parts of its potential contribution to China's future.


There is no question that China is rising to become a great world power, perhaps the greatest. The only question is what kind of a great power it will be, and what it will bring to world peace and civilisation? Perhaps more than showing the way ahead, the torch relay and the reaction it inspired has set off the dynamics that will shape the future direction.
