Confetti for the journey

It was the wrong compartment .lorna was aware of that now that it was to late to change.
From the corridor she had seen that it contained only two people. All the others had seemed full of holidaying families. But now that she had settled herself in a corner, opened her book ,and could surreptitiously observe the two people opposite. This fresh-faced boy and pretty girl were man and wife.there were specks of confetti on the floor.
The boy had sighed audibly scarcely troubling to conceal his resentment at the intrusion. The gril had withdrawn her hand from his and was pretending she had been married at least a year-except that she was toying , perhaps unconsciously, with her wedding ring
Lorna's own ring was tight on her finger. It had been so much part of her for seven years that she had almost fotgotten its existence. Now she remembered that it would be better to remove it before she met David. She tugged at the ring but it would not pass her knuckle. Her hand were holding the book.so she could not see her fingers struggling ;but the girl opposite could .suddenly, momentarily, her eyes met Lorna's.
They were blue, and clear, and honest; inquiring yet frighteningly discerning. Abashed ,Lorna returned to her book.
Of course, the child did not undrestand. She was barely out og her teens probably ten years younger than Lorna. And of course she was as full of happy illusions as Lorna herself had been at that age--when she and Tom were making their first journey together.
The boy opposite was much as Tom had been --big ,clean --looking .a litter awkward and a little rude with strangers to cover his awkwardness.
She remembered how on her honeymoon she had wanted to tell everyone how wonderful life was. She had wanted to share her happiness, but Tom had persistently drawn her away!
Come on let't go out of here!
I say ,don't tell everyne we're just married.
What would it be like with David,David was never embarrassed, never awkward. Even on that awful evening when Tom had creatde a scene by accusing her of paying too much attention to David even then David had only laughed.
But they all knew, after that evening ,that matters ahd reached a head. Tom did not trust her; she scorned his boorish and unjust suspicionand reasonably, in her view-refused to explain. And David, although he had gone away, had written to her-Lorna-if things get too bad come to me . I shall always be waiting.
Now barely a month later, she was going to David.
She wondered forgetting her book, if the gril opposite understood anything of this . did she ,as she went forward so confidently on the journey into married life ,know anything of the snags ahead? Did she realise how the little difference of opinion might grow, and multiply, and become confuse one with the other?
Lorna had an insane desire to warn her. She ought to know. Some day-five years hence, or less. She too might be making such a journey ,a second break with life, attempting a second start~~
She cought her breath sharply, suddenly afraid;then glanced quickly at the girl in case she had notied.
The blue eyes smiled. The gril wanted her to speak. But Lorna could find no answering smile and sought refuge behind her book. The gril turned to look out of the window.
The train roared westward. A vast panorama of flied and hedges, roads and villages, unrolled itself behind. Separating the old life from the new. It must seem like that to the gril, as it did to Lorna. Only --their cases were so different.
Suddenly the gril was busy about something in her lap. She had opened her handbag and a little pool of confetti had fromed in her lap. But she did not bursh it aside. Instead she took a little cardboard box-a wedding cake box-from her bag and put the confetti in to it. Pinch by pinch. Then she looked up and saw Lorna watching her.
This time she smelled openly, though she blushed a little! And said shyly, it's in case we ever quarrel. I am keeping some so is Dick. Then ,if we even feel like quarreling, one of us will put just a speck in front of the other-and them we shall remember ,and we shan't quarrel after all.
The boy laughed awkwardly and muttered. Oh heck, we are not going to quarrel.
The gril shook her haead and said almost seriously. Oh but we shall. Every body does. It is human nature , my parents often did ,but they soon got over them.
Lorna tried to smile. If only Tom had kept her temper-or she had kept hers. But she had felt righteously indignant at his fitst absurd suspicions. And then had taunted him . and both their tempers had been flung to the winds.
The gril said happily. We shall quarrel about the children. My parents always quarrelled about us -- about what we were to be called, and what we ought to eat and when we ought to go to bed and how we ought to behave --- but it didn't mean a thing because we did just what we pleased as soon as we were old enough.
She blushed a little again and confided. You see , we mean to have a family --two boys and two girls , if we can manage it , though we'd be content with less.Because children do help, in the end , don't you think ? I mean. People without children tend to quarrel more.
She broke off, and asked abruptly. What do you think is the ideal family?
Lorna fumbled helplessly with her book. She stared out of the window-but she heard herself protesting defensively, almost angrily. I don't know , I haven't thought . some people can't. you know.
The gril flushed crimson. Oh I -- I am sorry . I shouldn't talked that way .
It is all right , Lorna said quietly , and picked up her book.
The train was slowing down. The boy glanced at his watch and said with relief, salisbury. I thought we must be getting near.
Lorna gathered her things. The boy enquired, I say do you get out here? I thought you were going on -- I don't know why --
The platform slid into sight. Lorna stood up and the boy leaned forward to open the door for her.
Suddenly Lorna turned to the gril and held out her hand.
Good bye and thank you ,I hope you have your family and that you will be happy. I think you will .
Then as the boy held the door open for her, and she stopped out onto the platform she said to him , no I am no going further. As a matter of fact. And she laughed almost lightly- I've just realisedi I shouldn't be on this train at all. I've got to go back.
She left them to their bewilderment and went to find a telegraph office. She must write Tom. And as an afterthought-she had better wire David not to expect her.
