By Kristin Hostetter

Break 'Em In
Log some easy "city" miles in you new shoes before that epic trip.

By Kristin Hostetter

Break boots in slowly and completely. Wear them around the house and town, gradually working up to all day. Break-in time depends on the stiffness of the boot. Lightweight boots can be tamed in days, but all-leather mountain boots need weeks of wear.

http://a753.g.akamai.net/7/753/1851/85af4f837beb5e/www.backpacker.com/images/foot_fixing.jpg

http://a753.g.akamai.net/7/753/1851/93281143b21a24/www.backpacker.com/images/foot_tongue.jpg

The Boot Is Half Full

Must know secrets on tweaking boot fit.

Your feet tell no lies. If you feel your heel slipping or a pinky toe rubbing or other minor fit problems, then consider using simple techniques to modify your new boots. Brad Winebrenner, expert bootfitter from Nestors in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, says he uses several tricks to fine-tune fit.

Stretching
Bootfitters can rub, soften, or stretch out troublesome spots with a rubbing bar(see photo above) or a pneumatic stretcher. Most leather and synthetic footwear can be stretched from the inside out, says Winebrenner. Over the past five years he has solved numerous boot dilemmas with a simple push here, stretch there. The usual suspects are funky toe joints, bothersome bunions, bone protrusions, and extra-wide toes. "I usually tell customers to break in new boots naturally for a few days before I'll manually stretch them." For more serious rubs, he corrects the problem spot before customers leave the shop.

Spacers
Folks who need excess volume gulped up in their boots can consult a plethora of foot spacers found on the market. 5-irons, a flat spacer inserted under the insole, help adjust volume under the foot. Heel shims and other localized spacers target specific gaps. Tongue depressors placed between the laces and tongue fill in extra volume from the top. The biggest secret in all volume adjustment, admits Winebrenner, is to make sure the heel stays in the boot's heel pocket. Also, make sure your toes don't get pushed into the roof of the toe box.

Lacing
Minimize foot movement inside your boots by using a better lacing technique. The less your feet slide forward and back, the better. (see Lacing Techniques.)

http://www.lvye.org/uploadfiles/633131-commom_techniques.jpg

http://www.lvye.org/uploadfiles/637048-marathon_knot.jpg

http://www.lvye.org/uploadfiles/637049-heel_lock_b.jpg

http://www.lvye.org/uploadfiles/633140-low_volume_b.jpg

http://www.lvye.org/uploadfiles/637055-high_instep_b.jpg

http://www.lvye.org/uploadfiles/637059-cuff_pressure_b.jpg

http://www.lvye.org/uploadfiles/637064-granny_knot_b.jpg

Square Knot平结
http://www.lvye.org/uploadfiles/637069-square_knot_b.jpg

Common Lacing Techniques
From the Experts at Montrail
The standard lacing technique works well for many people but not everybody. Correct lacing is taut, but not too tight, from the toe up to the top of the boot or shoe. There should be no loose lacing and the lacing should contact the boot evenly and firmly.

Below are a few tried-and-true techniques. Use this as a starting point and experiment with your own.

Loop: If laces are slipping on a hook, lace "down" a hook instead of "up" creating a loop.

D-ring lock: By bringing the lace around through the eyelet from the top, pressure is applied on the lace.

Overhand knot: The most common means of locking off tension below the knot.

Surgeon's knot: this is a very secure means of locking off any chosen tension below the knot.

Marathon loop: Improves heel lock for low-cut shoes.

Common Techniques

Other Lacing Techniques
Low-Cut Shoe Heel Lock
Boot Heel Lock
Low Volume
High Instep
Cuff Pressure

Special Knot Techniques
Granny Knot
Square Knot

Low-Cut Shoe Heel Lock
Make a loop through the double eyelet at the top of the shoe and lace back through the loop. Pull up against the loop to snug your heel into the heel pocket.

Boot Heel Lock
To distribute pressure create a loop between two hooks and pass the lace from above and through, then continue upward.
Low Volume
To improve performance with lower-volume or narrow feet, utilize on or more of the "locking" techniques to hold the foot securely in place without causing excessive pressure or irritation.

High Instep
To reduce pressure over the instep, simply skip crossing the laces over the sensitive area sometimes associated with having a high instep. It's a good idea to use with a locking procedure before and after. As shown here.

Cuff Pressure
To eliminate lower skin irritation, finish the lacing by bringing the laces over the top of the hooks before tying the bow knot.

Granny Knot
This is a very common knot that is less secure than a square knot. If you end up with a knot where the bow loops point up and down, you have a granny knot.

Square Knot
To tie a square knot, begin with an overhand knot, take the two loops and pass "right over left, then left over right" and you have a square knot. The finished product should have bow loops that point to the sides.
By Kristin Hostetter
http://a753.g.akamai.net/7/753/1851/3b2f32a9d7a9f4/www.backpacker.com/images/article/boot0802_tester.jpg

Happy Feet
For maximum comfort, keep your feet drier and cooler.

By Kristin Hostetter

The average foot has some 250,000 sweat glands that ooze as much as 1/2 cup of sweat a day. Not a problem if you're strolling sockless in a pair of sandals. Big problem if all of those sweat glands are swaddled in a sock and encased in a leather boot. Trapped moisture promotes blisters and breeds stinky bacteria and fungus. "There isn't a whole lot you can do to stop the sweat," says Buck Tilton, director of the Wilderness Medicine Institute (WMI) and Backpacker contributing editor. "What you can do is effectively handle the moisture buildup." To keep your feet drier and cooler, try the following:

Wear synthetic socks. They're cooler and wick sweat from your skin faster than wool does. Also, wear a thin polypropylene sock liner to absorb sweat unless the socks' manufacturer recommends against this.
Change socks throughout the day as they get wet. Wear one pair for 2 to 3 hours, take a rest break, air-dry your feet, then put on a dry pair. Slip damp socks under a compression strap on your pack to dry as you hike.
Carry small amounts of foot powder, such as Dr. Scholl's, in recycled plastic spice shakers and apply it twice a day to dry feet.
Apply underarm antiperspirant to your feet. Seriously. Some backpackers swear by this, but before you try it in the backwoods, experiment at home to check for an allergic reaction.

By Kristin Hostetter

Fixing A Blister
A simple blister remedy gets you back on the trail fast.

By Kristin Hostetter

1 Clean the blister area with soap and water.

2 If the blister is not too swollen or painful, skip to Step 4. Otherwise, use a match flame to sterilize a pin or the tip of the sharpest blade on your pocketknife, then carefully cut a small slit at the bottom of the blister to drain the fluid. Leave the skin flap in place to protect the wound and speed healing.

3 Apply antiseptic ointment or a small circle of a nonadhering sterile dressing, such as Spenco 2nd Skin, directly on the blister.

4 Cut a doughnut-shaped piece of moleskin with a hole that's slightly larger than the blister. Place it over the blister and sterile dressing to create a pressure-free pocket for the sore. Cover the entire doughnut with a second piece of moleskin.

5 Secure the moleskin patch in place with medical tape. In a pinch, duct tape will do the job. For heel blisters, run tape strips along the sides of your foot toward the toes, then secure the ends with a few loops run around the instep.

6 Promote healing by keeping the blister moist with ointment or sterile dressing.
By Steve Howe
http://a753.g.akamai.net/7/753/1851/2a01a2a79cda72/www.backpacker.com/images/bootcare_main.jpg

A Long Life For Your Boots

Baby your boots with our expert advice below.
By Steve Howe

Always clean your boots after use," says Dave Page, owner-manager of Dave Page, Cobbler in Seattle, a major repair and warranty center for large retailers and manufacturers. "Take them to a utility sink and scrub them with an old veggie brush. They usually come home wet, so water's fine. Remove the footbeds. Dry the boots at normal room temperature, with no heat. Put a waterproofing treatment or a leather conditioner on them if they look dry. With modern, cemented-sole boots, don't overwaterproof them, and don't use any, I mean any, heat, because it can cause the sole edges to delaminate."

"Boots are pretty maintenance-free and durable," says Rick Applesies of Vasque. "But when you get a boot saturated and muddy, the mud draws a lot of moisture out of the leather as it dries. So after cleaning and drying, use a silicone-based leather treatment to recondition the leather. Silicones are absorbed better than wax treatments and don't tend to clog pores or inhibit leather breathability as much. Things like mink oil will soften leather too much. When boot leathers are tanned, often times stiffeners are put into the leather, and you don't want to lose all the support."

"Never put your boots next to a fire or stove," cautions Dave Smith of Danner Shoe Manufacturing Co. "Two things can happen. Put 'em too close, and you singe or melt or burn the materials. Second, wet leathers will shrink as they dry, and the boot's fit will change. Finally, don't wear your boots when working with pesticides, herbicides, and any other chemicals, since they can cause a sole to peel.

Waterproof Your Boots

Remove caked dirt and dried sweat by wiping boots with clean, warm water and drying them thoroughly prior to rubbing in a light layer of the leather conditioner recommended by their maker.

Avoid heat when treating or drying your boots. Excess heat will dry and shrink them plus degrade the glue that bonds the soles.
By Jonathan Dorn, BACKPACKER Executive Editor Dan Nelson

Can Fix

Can't Fix
Gear Rx: Boots
By Jonathan Dorn, BACKPACKER Executive Editor Dan Nelson

Most cobblers can repair separated seams in a boot's upper or tongue, give the leather a thorough cleaning and waterproofing, reglue peeled toe guards and rands, and replace or restitch busted eyelets and hooks. These jobs are generally quick and inexpensive. More costly are major structural repairs. If you need a midsole or outersole replaced or an upper completely retooled, your best bet is to contact the manufacturer for the name of an authorized repair shop, then get an estimate. Because retooled boots don't always fit as well as the originals, you may want to think about investing your cash in a new pair.

Many cobblers also provide custom services, from boots and footbeds made specifically for your feet to in-shop fittings. If your boots are giving your toes the squeeze or your Achilles tendons the pinch, a cobbler can stretch and soften the leather or use heat to reshape the heel counters.

Can Fix

Torn seams or holes in uppers. Cobblers can usually repair a torn seam or patch holes caused by chewing critters.
Separating toe guards and rands. If the rand separates at the glue line, a permanent adhesive will stick the pieces back together.
Broken lace hooks or lost eyelets.
Hot spots in otherwise well-fitting boots. Cobblers use several techniques to stretch toe boxes and other areas to improve fit.
Worn soles. Cobblers can replace most soles on high-quality hiking and climbing boots.
Can't Fix
Damaged leather uppers. If the leather has worn thin or has abrasions covering more than a third of the upper, you should replace the boots.
Worn soles on lightweight hikers. Resoling lightweight, inexpensive boots isn't cost effective.
Degraded leather. Mildew and mold usually means replacement. Treat your boots with conditioner or waterproofing regularly, and put them out to dry immediately when you return from a trip.
Broken midsole or shank. If the shank breaks, you'll need to replace the entire outersole unit, or more likely, the boot.
