Sportwool™

In 1994 research into the physiological benefits of wool led to the breakthrough development of Sportwool™. A technology that provides garments with unique vapour management and wicking properties, whilst maintaining Merino wool’s natural performance benefits.

<br>This Sportwool™ performance blend product effectively ‘air-conditions’ an athletes body, before during and after exercise. It is changing the sportswear and outerwear industry’s approach to fibre and fabric technology and is re-introducing wool to professional sports and outdoor clothing systems.

<br>Sportwool™ exemplifies the qualities of natural Merino wool performance and brings together a wide variety of product types under one distinctive marketing banner. Confirming, once more, all that is versatile, dynamic and demonstrably unique about an outstanding natural fibre.

<br>Wool is naturally hydophobic, although it hates water it is capable of holding up to 30% of its mass in vapour. A molecular view of a wool fibre reveals that around its central strand (or protein backbone) there exists Lysine and Aspartic side chains. The Lysine side chain contains the molecular group NH2 in which the Hydrogen atoms have a net positive charge relative to the Nitrogen. The Oxygen atoms of a water vapour molecule (H20) on the other hand have a net negative charge relative to the Hydrogen atom.
<br>
<br>As a result, the net negative charge on the Oxygen atom of the water vapour molecule is attracted to a net positive charge on the Hydrogen atoms in the NH2 group. This Hydrogen/Oxygen attraction process has the effect of allowing wool fibre to pull water vapour into themselves.
<br>
<br>There, if wool fibres are in close proximity to the skin, they do not act as a barrier to the mass transfer of water vapour. In fact, unlike most fabrics, wool actually speeds up the heat transfer process.
<br>
<br>Resulting in muscles which will be cooler and able to work at a higher levels without having adverse effects on the body’s finely tuned temperature requirements. No other fibre benefits from wool’s complex structure and the electrically charged side chains. Accordingly, wool’s vapour processing abilities and considerable cooling benefits are unique in clothing.
<br>
<br>Sportwool™ combines the unique high-performance composite or bi-component fabric structures of Merino wool with other fibres in such a way that the fabrics are able to take advantage of wool’s unique properties.

<br>During exercise the human body perspires in order to neutralise any adverse in core body temperature.
<br>
<br>To survive we have to sustain the correct internal core body temperature. For humans this is near 37.5&ordm;C as possible. Any fluctuation greater than plus or minus 4% can result in heat stroke and hypothermia which in turn becomes life threatening.
<br>
<br>That is why temperature control doesn’t just matter- it is essential.
<br>
<br>Muscle activity during exercise produces a rise in core body temperature. Blood supply to the skin’s surface is increased, triggering perspiration as the body’s natural cooling mechanism.
<br>
<br>erspiration is first expelled from the skin’s pores in the form of moisture vapour. It will later condense to liquid sweat on the skin’s surface.
<br>
<br>Clothing is a potential obstacle to vital evaporation process, especially in a rising temperature scenario. It is even more true of clothing which is unable to manage vapour, which establishes an additional thermal barrier which reduces the heat-transfer rate from the body.
<br>
<br>Trials were conducted in climate controlled chambers using 30 athletes in peak physical condition.
<br>
<br>The athletes exercised on a cycle ergometer at workloads related to their individual maximum work potential as measured by oxygen uptake or VO2 Max.
<br>
<br>Trials involved a 2 minute warm up at a workload of 100 watts. The workload was then increased 75% of the pre-determined VO2 max and maintained for the remainder of the trail.
<br>
<br>The objective trails showed Sportwool™ left the athletes feeling drier, less clammy and more comfortable.
<br>
<br>Objective measurements found that Sportwool™ had a lower rate of moisture concentration in the skin-clothing micro-climate than the competitive fabrics, and smaller fluctuations in moisture level with time.
<br>
<br>Modern waterproof garments are very efficient at keeping the weather out, but face major challenges when trying to let sweat and the clammy humidity that builds up inside such garment, escape to the outside atmosphere, particularly if it is raining.
<br>
<br>The Sportwool™ Weatherproof technology offers a radically different all-in-one solution. The wearer is able to experience a lightweight fabric with a total climate control system which also includes considerable thermal protection.
<br>
<br>Because the inner face of the fabric contains Merino wool, the Sportwool™ Weatherproof fabric is capable of pulling significant amounts of vapour into itself via the electrical attraction established between the charged ions in the Sportwool™ Merino wool side chains.
<br>
<br>The Merino wool basis of all Sportwool™ technology reduces the tendency for the vapour the body produces to condense into sweat. The Merino wool acts as a vapour reservoir, which is able to drive the sweat vapour molecules through the waterproof outer layer by hydroscopic absorption and desorption before they condense into sweat.

<br>Sportwool™ Weatherproof technologies can significantly reduce the damp, clammy build-up that active wearers of modern waterproof and windproof garments have had to learn to tolerate by removing sweat in vapour format from the garment assembly micro-climate and ‘feeding it’ away through the waterproof and windproof layer.<br><br>

从旅行中,学习到很多西方的先进科技.就象Silver Fibre,草原上的民族早就知道银器皿可以长时间保存奶制品;皇帝也早就知道银能检测一些含有硫的毒物和消毒;古老的针灸就是用的银针......可是我们的文明似乎停止的,以至于后来西方人创新现在反而令我们瞠目结舌,当我们一谈起户外用品,什么GORE??,POLARTEC...都再不是中国人发明的了.中国在很多方面已经落后西方很多很多.当我们看到这些新科技时,只是在惊讶它的惊人的价格,却无法使自己相信,科技能够达到那样的程度,仅仅一件380克的抓绒可以耐零下的低温?...我们国人应当在旅行的时候,把眼界带回中国,唤醒中国人的创意,不要再仅仅是简单加工...希望将来能够看到中国自己的品牌!<br><br>
