<br>Aim for a known route, e.g. road / big river then use compass at 90° heading to determine position along it

<br>Assuming group is not late, return to last known place
<br>Try to guess where they might have gone
<br>Go get them, e.g. nearest pub

<br>Recruit any passing ODS groups to aid in the search
<br>Ask passers by if they’ve seen anyone
<br>Get a sensible description from the group
<br>If late, or getting late, recruit as many ODS walk leaders as possible
<br>Get the co-ordinator in on it ASAP
<br>Keep any search patterns small, limit to ½ hour there AND back
<br>Leave something like a postit note on the bus windscreen
<br>
<br>Injury 1: Experienced walkers present
<br>Send them for help in groups of 2+
<br>Once any parties have left, STAY PUT unless in any immediate danger
<br>repare the departing group as much as possible, i.e. detailed instructions: "Joe Bloggs has knackered his left leg and the group is at xxxyyy, hiding under the 3rd ash tree in from the right"
<br>Look after the rest of the group
<br>Choose between the emergency services or the ODS, if a hospital job go for 999, if a small sprain go for the ODS
<br>Don’t send the 1st aider away, nor the group equipment.

<br>Injury 2: ½ way up Whernside
<br>Take the rest of the group to, say, Ribblehead pub to wait
<br>Leave 1 or 2 people with the injured and the 1st aider. Priorities: 1) First aider, 2) Equipment, 3) Friend
<br>Make the waiting group ready for: 1) A long wait, 2) Cold, 3) Shelter, 4) Make them visible, 5) Stay put
