hostel/hitch hiking
Try hitch hiking. That was what I did in Ireland. It was fun!
Bus is usually cheaper than train.
I don't know the price difference between camping and staying in a hostel. I guess that you will save money if you share a camp ground with some other party.
I used youth hostel which cost $6-20 USD in 1996. In hostel you share room with others. Usually there is a kitchen that you can cook your own meal. Bring your own sheets otherwise you pay more. It was interesting to stay at the hostel. I met people all over the world. I remembered I went to a rowdy Irish bar with two Scots. Summer time university converts the dorm to hostel. I stayed in the dorm of the famous Trinity College in Dublin. When I was in St. Petersburg (Leningrad), I stayed at the State University of St. Petersburg. People were weird there. They didn't smile or say hi.
In capitals, Chinese Embassy is likely to have cheap accommodation and provides meals. I stayed in such one in London (5 pounds) in 1996 (much cheaper than the hostel). But mind you It was a very strange place.
