Ten tips to tune up your racing
Every good skier who races and every good racer who free skis knows that one complements the other. Most certainly, serious skiers who race benefit from blending their free-skiing skills into more course-restricted racing skills.
It’s important that you understand just how this can work for your racing. To this end, here are some tips on ecognizing the connection between free skiing and racing,
while focusing on skiing techniques specific to racing.
Tip 1: When you first get into racing, if possible ski only recreational giant slalom courses. These courses are generally set to have rhythmical and rounder-shaped turns.
This is just the kind of turning environment you want when getting started in racing.
Tip 2: Your line through the gates is critical. Skiers may have different lines depending on how early or how late they initiate their turns and the degree of carving they have. It’s important that you find the line that is most efficient for your type of skiing.
Tip 3: As you progress in your racing on more advanced courses, it’s important to look at least two to three gates ahead so you are prepared to change your turning rhythm to adjust to changes in the gate pattern. While free skiing, you can challenge your ability to turn on demand by picking out bumps, trees, or other objects and planning to finish your turn when you get to them, as if they were gates laid out on the course.
Tip 4: You’ve got to be able to carve your skis while free skiing if you expect to carve them while racing.
Tip 5: Your hip is the focus in a good racing curve in giant slalom. You’ve got to keep your hip to the inside of the turn. The hip angulation that’s created prevents skidding and maintains the carving of your outside ski.
Tip 6: Don’t pinch the gate; that is, don’t get your feet too close to the gate while turning. This actually causes you to skid and lose your line. Instead, get your hip near the gate with your feet two or more away from the gate, maintaining your carving.
Tip 7: Come up our of a turn in a forward direction down the hill to keep your center of mass with the center of your skis. If you let the skis get ahead of you, you have to spend too much time correcting your balance, and in so doing you can lose not only time but your line as well.
Tip 8: Your hands need to be in front of your body. Think of the tips of your skis and your hands as the first objects to pass the gate and you’ll keep your weight forward.
Tip 9: You’ve got to be aware of your shoulders. When your shoulders are not square with the hill, you may lean into the hill, which causes your skis to skid, and again you lose your carve and your line. If the hands are forward, your downhill hand should be lower in order to influence your shoulders to tip square with the hill, also influencing your hip to angulate to help maintain your carve. So, with a right turn , the left arm is lower.
Tip 10: You can make or break a race depending on your start and finish. To gain a timing advantage at the start, project your chest and upper body down the hill, pushing off with your poles to propel your body down the starting ramp and into the race course. In this way, your feet enter the course last, hitting the wand that starts the timing clock after your upper body is already into the race. For the finish make your last turn straight-that is, on most race courses the last gate is set to ski straight through it. So for the last two gates, pick the straightest line and try to get to the finish without
arching any turns.
Here are a few more notes:
You need to find your “100 percent” when racing, and it may actually mean skiing less aggressively than you think.
