My favorite hiking/climbing place here is Yosemite and Eastern Sierra. It's about 4 hours drive from bay area in summer time but much longer during winter months due to road closure. Many mountains over 4000m there, some of them are very technical (rock/ice climbing).

Fewer people go hiking during winter months because people spend most weekends skiing. If you like skiing, Lake Tahoe has lots of good ski resorts, much better than what you can find in China. I just came back from a South America climbing trip and plan to do some ice climbing and snow hiking in the coming month.

MEC is the Canadian REI.  Everything is in CDN, in REI quality, but Canadian price, eh!  I bought my Pamir bibs there, great for ice climbing.  I highly recommend softshell for ice climbing,especially in colder weather.

Where do you guys ice climbing in CA?  Just curious.
I met a few Californians while I was ice climbing in the Canadian Rockies.

gearexpress and climbhigh are also my frequently visited sites. I bought biners and ATC from gearexpress.MEC won't ship anything to US unless it's their own brand. climbhigh's bargain list hasn't changed much for the last year, kinda weird.The best water ice in CA is in Lee Vining Canyon just east of Yosemite. The season is relatively short (late December to March) but ice is good. Check summitpost.com and look for some descriptions and photos under Mount Dana.
